Biblical Roles in the Home and Church

The Bible presents a clear pattern for the home, where men and women serve in distinct yet complementary roles.

Complementarianism (the big picture)

We affirm that the roles of men and women complement one another. What does this mean? It means that men and women are equal in value and dignity because they are both made in the image of God (Genesis 1:27). At the same time, in His perfect design, God has given distinct responsibilities to each. These responsibilities are expressed both in the home and in the life of the church.

Men’s and women’s responsibilities in the home

From the beginning, even before the fall of Adam and Eve, we see that God created man first and entrusted him with responsibility—to name the animals, care for the earth, and instruct Eve. When Adam failed to guard and care for his wife, the serpent entered, and Eve fell into temptation.

For this reason, Ephesians 5:23–25 teaches that “the husband is the head of the wife.” This headship does not imply superiority, but responsibility. A man is called to lead his home with sacrificial love, loving his wife as Christ loved the church.

From the beginning, Scripture teaches that woman was created to be a “helper” fit for man. This highlights a distinct role, not a lesser value. The woman is called to come alongside and support, not to bear the primary responsibility of headship.

In the garden, we see the consequences when God’s order is disregarded. Eve took the fruit, ate, and gave it to Adam (Genesis 3). Adam was present but failed to exercise his responsibility as head, and the result was devastating. This account shows the importance of living according to God’s design for the family.

Ephesians 5:22 says, “Wives, submit to your husbands.” This does not mean that men are superior or more valuable than women, but that God has given distinct and complementary roles within the home.

Biblical Instruction for Parents

We understand from Scripture that baptizing or presenting children is not a pattern established in the Bible. The reference to Jesus being presented in the temple (Luke 2:22) reflects a Jewish tradition that His parents were observing, not a command or model given to the church.

However, we do believe that parents should be instructed in their role according to Scripture. For this reason, we offer classes designed to equip and guide parents in raising their children biblically (Deuteronomy 6:4–7; Proverbs 22:6; Ephesians 6:4).

Roles Within the Church

In Scripture, we see that women may serve in many areas of church life, but not in the offices of pastor or elder. Because pastors and elders are responsible for teaching and leading the church, we affirm that the instruction of men in the Word is entrusted to qualified men (1 Timothy 2:11–12), men who demonstrate godly character and faithful leadership in their homes.

The wives of pastors and elders play an important, supportive role, assisting their husbands and helping disciple and instruct the women within the congregation.
